If you take the word tumese, that means swollen and firm, and if you apply that to liposuction, that means we’re going to take our target areas and make them swollen and firm. And we achieve that by using a dilute combination of lidocaine, epinephrine and sodium bicarbonate. Now, what each of those things do? Lidocaine is the medication you may have heard of that is used to dull and numb the pain in the areas we’re going to treat.
Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is going to be used to vasoconstrict. That means the blood vessels are going to tighten up and that’s going to minimize blood loss during your procedure. The final medication that we use, in tumescent anesthesia, is sodium bicarbonate. That medication is used to dull the stinging sensation when we do inject the fluid into your body.
